Life Story for
Matthew Walsh, age 90, of Westfield, NJ died on Friday, March 23, 2018. Matt was born on August 13, 1927 in Dorchester, MA to Patrick and Margaret Walsh. He had one brother, Leo Walsh who preceded him in death.
Matt attended Dorchester High School for Boys, Boston College and received his Master’s degree in Criminology from the University of Notre Dame. Matt married the love of his life (Ann Keefer Walsh) on January 16th, 1954 in Hartford, Connecticut. Together, they raised seven children and instilled in them the importance of the gift of family.
Matt and Ann left behind a legacy. Matt was preceded in death by Ann, and their eldest son, Dennis Walsh. Matt is survived by a long list of family: Megan Walsh, Maureen & Rick Kaps (Ricky & his fiancé Emily, Matt, Shannon, Kevin), Brian & Amy Walsh (Amy, Sean, Max, Dennis), Jane & John Hearon (Brian, Allison, Tom), Kevin & Patrice Walsh (Katie and John Gibson, Mike, Kelly), Patrick & Aileen Walsh (Jim and Erin), Megan O’Halloran Walsh & Mike Davidson (Matt, Murphy).
For the first 20 years of Matt and Ann’s life together, they moved around the country for Matt’s job with the Federal Bureau of Prisons. They left Hartford, CT, to Denver, CO, to Ashland, KY, to Lompoc, CA, to El Reno, OK, and finally settled in Westfield, NJ in 1973. They raised their family on 200 Wyoming Street. Westfield was their home, as was St. Helen’s Church.
Matt and Ann shared a very strong Catholic faith, and spent a great deal of time attending countless first holy communions and confirmations of their grandchildren. It brought them incredible joy and pride. They enjoyed traveling together and visiting their children and grandchildren. For many years, Matt volunteered at St. Helen’s counting collection money. He enjoyed spending time with other church members and giving back. Matt’s other pleasures included reading multiple newspapers daily, doing crossword puzzles, walking, and gardening. He was an incredible story teller, and had a gift for bringing a smile to everyone’s face.
A wake will be held on Tuesday, March 27th from 4:00pm to 7:00pm at Dooley Funeral Home, 556 Westfield Ave, Westfield NJ 07090. The funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Helen’s Catholic Church, 1600 Rahway Ave, Westfield, NJ 07090. The family suggests, that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.
