Beloved husband, father, and grandfather, US Army veteran, retired firefighter
Alexander J McGrory, 87, of Westfield passed away at home on March 20, 2018.
A Funeral Mass will be offered at St. Helen’s Church, Westfield, NJ at 10:30 on Saturday, March 24, 2018. Viewing will be held on Friday, March 23, 2018 at Dooley’s Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m.
Born in Newark, NJ, Al lived in Harrison, East Newark, and Roselle before moving to Westfield 45 years ago.
After graduating from West Side High School in 1948, Al worked at Otis Elevator in Newark until going into the Army during the Korean Conflict. He served for two years, much of that time a front-line infantryman, and was discharged as a Corporal in 1953.
Al joined the Newark Fire Department in 1957, where he worked for 33 years, eventually rising through the ranks to Deputy Chief. He started as a firefighter in Engine Company 17 and was promoted to Captain of 9 Engine. He was later promoted to Chief of the 4th Battalion before finally being promoted to Deputy Chief. He also worked as Chief of Staff and acting Chief of Department. Al was instrumental in the creation of the Newark Fire Department’s Hazardous Materials Unit and retired from the Fire Department in 1989.
In his retirement, Al enjoyed traveling, reading, and doing his daily crossword puzzles as well as spending time with family. He was also an active member of the Essex County Retired Police and Firemen’s Association.
Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Charlotte, a son, Kevin and his wife, Marie, a daughter, Susan Czeslowski and her husband, Stephen, two brothers, Bill and Francis “Bud” McGrory, and five grandchildren, Daniel, John and Luke McGrory, and Alexandria and Stephanie Czeslowski.
Al was predeceased by his parents, Alex and Sara McGrory.
